Our Location
The Farm
In the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the western edge of Bodmin Moor. The area is an undoubted haven for wildlife and is listed as an area of great historic and scientific value being on the edge of Treswallock Down a registered site of Special Scientific Interest.
The approach is from a quiet moorland lane bordering Treswallock Common, over a cattle grid, onto a private drive ensuring seclusion and privacy, leading to a small courtyard, the holiday cottage and adjacent farmhouse.
The first recorded history of Mellon was 1311 – known then as Middlelond (middle land) there is historical evidence of a long period of settlement. This ancient enclosed farmland comprises of 18 acres of species rich hay meadows and traditional pasture. These small enclosures of about 1-2 acres are encased by ancient hedgerows’ which provide a variety of flora and fauna.
The wildlife interest is varied. There is a large amount of invertebrate activity (butterflies and dragonflies group) over the wet areas. A water meadow is home to a range of species amongst the rushes. There is extensive small bird and mammal activity through the farm and onto the adjacent Treswallock Common which is part of an area designated SSSI.
The farm land is grazed by our flock of Jacob sheep and an assortment of free range hens and managed traditionally without the use of artificial fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides.
Bodmin Moor
Our location and direct level access onto open moorland is excellent for walking and exploring this beautiful area of Cornwall.
An inspirational, open rugged landscape with a unique magical atmosphere, rich in ancient archaeological sites and natural history.
Footpaths, granite stiles and historic stone hedges traverse meadows and peaceful lanes onto ancient tracks to the upland moor grazed by ponies, cattle and sheep - often your only companions.
Brown Willy and Rough Tor - Comwall's two highest tors can be reached from this side of the moor. Rough Tor has an extensive Iron Age hill fort on the summit and a number of Bronze Age settlements.
